Exotification of a male foreign body
Drawing from our personal experience, Lucky Lartey (Ghana/Australia) and I (Singapore/Germany) come together to interrogate the exotic gaze on our male foreign body within a Eurocentric system. Our investigation focuses on how cultural identities, gender, (post-)colonialism, capitalism, privilege and art contribute to the creation of the exotic gaze on our culturally-othered bodies. The aim is to help each other develop performance strategies to resist and deconstruct the exotic gaze that is particular to each of our situation.
The research laid the foundation for the performance Exotic Animal, which premiered in 2020.
The 1st phase of the research took place in Singapore (2017), supported by Australia Council for the Arts.
The 2nd phase took place in Berlin, Germany (2018), supported Fonds Darstellende Künste
