Assistance at the end of life

Dealing with and preparing for death touches on many different levels. It can involve organizational, medical, psychological, emotional and spiritual matters. You will find different support services for these different areas.

Medical care can be provided by hospices and specialized outpatient palliative care (SAPV), among others. Hospices offer both outpatient and inpatient services. SAPV provides medical care in the home environment for people suffering from incurable terminal illnesses. Overview of SAPV: https://homecareberlin.de and hospice services in Berlin: https://hospiz-berlin.de/

Funeral directors can help you with questions about funerals. You can specify your own funeral wishes at any time and record them in a funeral decree. An overview of people who accompany self-determined funerals can be found, for example, at bohana: https://bohana.de/

Death Doulas (also known as Sterbeammen or Sterbegefährt:innen) offer support, comfort and guidance to those who are confronted with a terminal illness or death. Death doulas also promote knowledge and exchange on the topics of death and dying. Their non-medical, holistic support can include emotional, spiritual and practical aspects. In Berlin, Jessica Aman and Alessa Rhode have founded the Death Doula Collective: www.alessa-rhode.de and www.jessica-aman.de.

In “Last Aid” courses, you can learn about dealing with dying and prepare yourself. You can find out more about the courses here: https://www.letztehilfe.info/

Offers for mourners

Grieving is an ability that we humans have to deal with loss, parting and painful experiences. Grieving is a complex process and does not follow fixed phases. How grief feels and expresses itself is individual and different. Sometimes it can be useful and helpful to seek professional support during the grieving process. In addition to psychologists, there are specially trained grief workers for this purpose. It also helps some people to talk to others, e.g. in a bereavement group or another format for mourners.
